Tyler M's Star Service Project
Christmas Presents for Needy Children
For my Star project, I helped provide Christmas gifts for needy
children. Last summer I met a missionary named Mark Dover. He is a
missionary in Mexico and he said that alot of children don't have any
Christmas presents. I decided to help him by collecting toys for the
children in the areas where he works.
This project involved alot of planning. I talked to the staff at my
church, St. James UMC, to find out who could help me with the project. I
made announcements at the youth activities requesting that they bring toys
for the Mexican children. I also asked my homeroom class at school to
participate. I made flyers for both groups with information about the
project. The youth and staff at my church as well as my homeroom class
contributed toys.
The next step I took was placing collection boxes at church and school.
After the gifts were collected, some scouts of Troop 149 helped me sort the
gifts and put them in bags.
I had to e-amil Mr. Dover several times throughout the project to find
out information about wrapping the gifts, delivery, etc. Communication was
difficult since Mr. Dover does not always work were a computer is available.
We arranged for him to pick up the gifts while he was in Athens during
Thanksgiving week.
From this project I have learned that projects require alot of
communication. I had to keep reminding people to bring in gifts. Most of
the work was in the actual planning and coordinating the project. People
were very generous. I collected over 100 items and spent over 30
hoursworking on this project. I realized that we can make a difference in
the lives of other people. These gifts were the only presents the Mexican
children received for Christmas.
