Great Adventure 2001
Bahamas
June 16-23 2001
Boys and Adults from Troop 149 had a great time traveling to the Bahamas. We spent 6 days in the Bahamas sailing, snorkeling, fishing, and seeing the sites. We traveled on three sail boats and visited the Cays near Bimini. We swam with sharks, barracudas, sting rays, puffer fish, and numerous other beautiful reef fish.
We visited sunken ships including the Sapona which we swam through. It is a large concrete ship that was sunk by a hurricane. It stands half under water and is a great place to snorkel. We caught Barracuda, Yellow Snapper, Hognosed Snapper, Mahi Mahi, and other fish. We also gathered conch and had conch fritters.
The snorkeling was great except when the barracudas had an attitude. It is a little scary to be surrounded by barracudas with their teeth shining.
The last night in the Bahamas was spent touring Bimini. We got to see the town and have hamburgers !! The next morning we sailed back to Florida. On the way one of the boats ran out of gas and we towed it with one of the other boats. We got back to our start point at 3AM in the morning. There was a lot of tired scouts on the plane the next day.
Other highlights included:
1) Crossing the Gulf Stream
2) The oil filter falling out of one boat
3) Getting stuck twice on sand bars
4) Swimming through Tunnel Rock
5) Bimini Road
6) Sea Shells
7) Star Fish
8) Visiting islands
9) Light House visit
10) Cooking
11) Cleaning the heads
12) Spear Fishing
All in all it was a great trip. Let's do it again soon !!!!!!
