Conservation Service Projects
Conservation Service Project possibilities
Conservation projects are an important part of Scouting. They tie in with the Outdoor Code, with being Thrifty, and with our Leave No Trace program. Conservation projects can be sized for Star, Life, or Eagle.
Conservation projects include a lot of different areas. For instance:
- Water Conservation: Awareness programs on using water responsibly.
- Community Recycling Programs: Helping set up, publicize, or facilitate recycling efforts; Christmas tree recycling.
- Trail Maintenance and Trail Repair: Either creating new trails or controlling erosion and overgrowth on existing ones. Tread maintenance, installing water bars, creating bridges.
- Revegetation/Reforestation: Planting trees, planting ornamental plants and ground covers; mulching and erosion control.
- Campsite Restoration: Erosion control, campfire-location rebuilding.
- Water Habitat Enhancement: Marking storm drains, cleaning up streams, enhancing fish habitat
- Bird Habitat Enhancement: Building bird houses, building bird feeders, planting trees
We have a list of contact people on the web-site, including for the Botanical Gardens, Sandy Creek Park, Sandy Creek Nature Center, the USDA, and several local schools. Projects for Star or Life could also be done at Camp Rainey Mountain.
Note: If you have earned both Environmental Science and Citizenship in the World, as well as either Soil & Water Conservation or Fish & Wildlife Management Merit Badges, you may receive the World Conservation Award!
Projects can also be used for Leave No Trace Awareness Awards; 50-Miler Awards; and for those looking for a real challenge, the Hornaday Awards!
