Recommended Gear List for AT Hike

Tent:
1. tent (should be seam sealed)
2. ground cloth
3. tent poles and stakes

Packing:
1. pack with padded hip belt
2. pack cover or large trash bag that will fit over your pack
3. extra large trash bag to put over your pack at night
(you never put your pack in your tent at night when you backpack)
4. enough large freezer bags to put all your clothes in your pack in (this is to keep your clothes dry in case of rain)
5. at least 2 quarts of drinking water

Each crew member will carry their share of the crew gear and food. you should leave approximately 1/4-1/3 of your backpack empty to accomodate your share. Your crew chief will be responsible for issuing crew gear and food

Sleeping:
1. sleeping bag in stuff sack lined with plastic bag
2. sleep clothes
3. straps to hold sleeping bag on exterior pack frame (sleeping bag will go inside an internal pack) NO BUNGEE CORDS

4. sleeping pad

Clothing:
Hiking clothes:
1. hiking boots(well broken in) or tennis shoes
2. 2 pr heavy wool socks
3. 2 pr liner socks
4. hiking shorts or pants (no bluejeans)
5. t-shirt (poly pro or cotton)
6. long sleeve shirt
7. hat or cap

Clothes in Pack:
1. wool socks
2. liner socks
3. long pants (cotton) (no bluejeans)
4. sweater or jacket (wool or polar fleece)
5. t-shirt
6. sturdy rain suit or poncho
7. camp shoes
8. glove liners or fleece gloves
9. 1 change of underwear
10. 1 stocking cap
11. 1 pr insulated underwear(polypro or silk)

other items in pack:
1. one spoon
2. one cup (some folks like a small bowl, too)
3. small pocket knife
4. matches or lighter
5. small flashlight
6. bandanna or hankerchief (BB)
7. tooth brush/tooth paste (BB)
8. whistle
9. personal ditty bag (you can use a large freezer bag with your name on it for you personal items that will go in the bear bag at night)
10. compass
11. personal first aid kit
12. camera and film (optional) (BB)
13. watch (optional)
14. money for breakfast on the way up and lunch afterwards (maybe)
Basically you will be hiking with one set of clothes and have a extra set of clothes in case of rain or cold weather in your pack.

Additional gear for Adults:
Treking poles or hiking staff (reduces strain on knees)

Bear Policies:
1. NO FOOD GOES INTO A TENT.
2. ALL SMELLABLES GO INTO BEAR BAG AT NIGHT
3. IF YOU SPILL FOOD ON YOUR CLOTHES, THEY GO UP IN THE BEAR BAG AT NIGHT.
4. IF YOU TAKE SNACKS, THEY GO IN THE BEAR BAG AT NIGHT
5. ALWAYS CARRY SNACKS IN FREEZER BAGS IN YOUR PACK. IF FOOD SPILLS IN YOUR PACK, THEN YOUR PACK GOES UP WITH THE BEAR BAG.
6. MAKE SURE YOUR TENT IS CLEAN. ON TROOP TRIPS SOMETIMES SCOUTS EAT IN THEIR TENTS AND LEAVE FOOD SCRAPS OR PAPER WRAPPERS IN TENT. THIS SHOULD BE REMOVED.
7. AT NIGHT, PACKS SHOULD BE AT LEAST 15 FEET FROM YOUR TENT.
8. Crew Chief will define the Bear Triangle to their crews. No tent may be sit up within the triangle

Remember it will be at least 10-15 degrees cooler on the trail than here in Athens. Prepare for the unexpected and you will not be unprepared for when it happens. EXAMPLE: The sun is shining in Athens, you still need to take your rain gear.
